Week of March 18th: Uncooperative Conditions (Wind and Cold)

Cleanup has continued in earnest over the last week as we move ever closer to opening the golf course. Two additional seasonal staff members started Wednesday and have been busy picking up the many piles we have around the course. The wind the last week has not done us any favors as pine cones and debris continue to fall around the course. A lot of progress was made this last week with picking up piles, but this weeks wind has been a source of frustration for Matt and the crew. Previously cleaned areas look like they were never touched. The man hours invested in cleanup this winter have been astronomical and has really taken a lot of time away from projects. An additional pine tree on the right-side of 8 fell Thursday during the day. This tree had lost one of its leaders during the winter and was already marked to be taken down in the future.
Freezing temperatures and frosty mornings restricted our ability to work on turf surfaces so we shifted our attention to work to bunkers, putting out course accessories, and picking up wood chip piles. It was 23 degrees Friday morning which will hopefully be the lowest temperatures we see until the end of the year.
Bunker Work:
While the windy and cold conditions complicated some of our cleanup plans we performed some much needed work to some bunkers around the course. Extensive edging was done to bunkers on 1, 3, 6, and 12. Roughly 49 tons of sand has already been hauled out to bunkers around the course with another 50 tons staged in the clubhouse parking lot. Frosty mornings were a good time to spread these piles of sand, but the very low temperatures on Thursday and Friday morning did manage to freeze the sand in the bunkers making them unworkable.
The Agronomy team is hoping to solidify an opening date for the golf course by Wednesday the 27th. A few days before the opening date an email will be sent to the membership.
